Following on from our recent article regarding pre-sessionals; Pre-sessional English Courses: All You Need to Know, we've been looking in to your top choices for this upcoming academic year.

 

Depending on your own personal level of English, and the level required by your chosen university, you may only need to do a short course. In general, pre-sessional courses last from between 4 – 12 weeks, though some can be up to 100 weeks plus!

 

Read on for our top picks of pre-sessional courses running this year, and all the information you need to know about them.

Royal Holloway University, London

Royal Holloway offer pre-sessional English courses of up to 12 weeks to students in receipt of an offer to study a degree at the university. Their programme is intensive, and involves 40 hours of teaching time a week, including regular one-to-one or small group consultations. Students taking the 12 week course must achieve a final mark of at least 40% to be able to pass on to their master’s degree. Those taking the 4 or 8 week courses, need only fulfil the course attendance requirements and complete all assessments to be able to move on to their degree. The entrance requirements for each course vary according to students existing IELTS results and needs for their future course. More details can be found in the link below.

University of Sheffield

The University of Sheffield offers a range of different pre-sessional courses to students, based on their English language requirements. The main courses are either 10 or 6 weeks, but the university does offer longer or shorter courses as required. Students receive 21 hours of tuition per week, and receive full tutorial support throughout the course. In order to qualify for the courses, students must have achieved an IELTS score of no more than one band below the overall requirement. See the link below for more information.

6 week course – 24th July to 2nd September 2017

Newcastle University

Newcastle University offer 10 or 6 week pre-sessional English courses, at both their campus in Newcastle and London. The entry requirements differ according to the English Language Band you are required to meet. This will be clearly marked on your offer letter, but you can find out more information in the link below. The course is delivered by INTO Newcastle University at their purpose-built facilities. Students will attend classes for 20 hours over the course of each week, in class sizes of a maximum of 18 students.

10 week course – 29th June to 8th September 2017

6 week course – 27th July to 8th September 2017

10 week course – £4,750

Swansea University

Swansea University offer 3 different pre-sessional courses; 12, 10, and 6 weeks. Each course is designed to provide students with a specific exit grade, so students can choose the course most suitable for their course entry requirements. For students looking for a 6.0 IELTS score, the 12 week course is most suitable, whilst students looking for 6.0 or higher are recommended the 10 week course. The 6 week course is for those students looking for a 6.0 or 6.5 or higher IELTS score. Each course involves 23 hours of teaching time per week, and the maximum class size is 18 students.

10 week course – 3rd July to 8th September 2017

6 week course – 31st July to 8th September 2017

University of Lincoln

The University of Lincoln offers 10 and 5 week pre-sessional English courses to international students wanting to study at the university. The course involves 18 hours of teaching per week, and students are expected to also take the time to learn and study in their own time. Classes hold a maximum of 15 students, and are taught by experienced, professional English Language teachers. Full details on the entry requirements for each course can be found in the link below.
