Many universities in the UK opened their applications for student accommodation this month. For most, postgraduate students are not guaranteed accommodation when they accept their offer, so we recommend that students apply as early as they can.


There are a few different accommodation options for postgraduate students in the UK; either from the university direct, or through a private company. You may prefer to live in accommodation provided directly by your chosen university. These are usually within a good location to all the university facilities, or may even be directly on campus. It also means you have better peace of mind, no dealing with questionable landlords, and is much easier to manage if you are outside of the UK. In order to apply for university accommodation, you must hold at least a conditional offer to study for your master's there.


Take a look at some of the universities to whom you can already apply for accommodation:


University of Birmingham

Application deadline: 31st July 2017

The University of Birmingham have three accommodation options: Selly Oak Village – closest to the university campus with plenty of choices of bars, restaurants and supermarket shopping; Pritchatts Park Village – just ten minutes from campus and close to the train station; and The Vale Village – the universities largest accommodation site, set in lakeside parkland.

The university guarantees a room in university accommodation, or nominated bedspace in partner accommodation to all international postgraduate students, provided that they apply for accommodation by the deadline as above, are new to Birmingham, and are coming to the university on their own.

University of Leicester

Application deadline: 30th June 2017

There are two university accommodation options at the University of Leicester: Oadby Student Village – a fifteen minute bus ride to the university campus, located in the surroundings of the university's botanical gardens; and City Living – a combination of four sites spread across the city centre, and just a short walk from the university campus.

City University London

Application deadline: no deadline, but rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis so early application is advised.

City University London have three accommodation options for postgraduate students: Alliance House – a residence in North London, exclusively for City University students; Willen House – a residence exclusively for City University students just a ten minute walk from campus; and Pure City – the university's newest accommodation block, seven minutes’ walk from the campus.

University of Southampton

Application deadline: 1st August 2017 (please note, rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis so we would advise applying as soon as you receive your offer).

The University of Southampton have four types of accommodation for students: Wessex Lane – a large complex of halls providing a student village feel less than a mile from the university campus; Glen Eyre – closer to the university campus, this halls complex consists of 1900 rooms split into several blocks; Mayflower Halls – a city centre apartment block just two minutes from the train station; and City Gateway – one of the newest halls of residence blocks, exclusively for postgraduate students at the university.

International fee paying postgraduate students are guaranteed an offer university accommodation in their first year of study. All postgraduate students are housed either in the postgraduate only accommodation blocks, or will be placed with other postgraduate students in apartments on separate postgraduate floors.

King's College London

Application deadline: 12th June 2017

The university has 11 different accommodation buildings, located across and around South East London, including Stratford, Tower Bridge, and Waterloo.

All new international postgraduate students are guaranteed accommodation at one of the university's residences. Please note, only applications received by 12th June will be guaranteed accommodation.

Brunel University London

Application deadline: ongoing deadline, but rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis so early application is advised.

All of the university's halls of residence are on campus, meaning students will only ever have a maximum of ten minutes walk to any of the university facilities. Halls of residence for postgraduate students include: Isambard Complex – made up of over 1,000 rooms spread out over 17 blocks, this residence is located on the west side of campus; Fleming Hall – located in the heart of campus, comprising of 380 rooms shared over 52 flats; and Saltash Hall – situated close to the Students Union, and overlooking the nearby River Pinn.

Goldsmiths, University of London

Application deadline: 12th June 2017 (rooms are allocated on a first come, first served basis)

Goldsmiths offers postgraduate students four types of accommodation, all within easy access to the university campus: Batavia Mews – located in New Cross, just across the road from the university campus this is the closest accommodation available for postgraduate students; Quantum Court – this halls of residence is a twenty minute commute from the university campus, located next to the River Thames in Shadwell; Raymont Hall – newly refurbished for 2017, this halls of residence is located in Brockley and is a twenty minute walk to the Goldmiths campus; and Town Hall, Camberwell – located in the refurbished old town hall in Camberwell, just a 15 minute commute to the university campus.

University of York

Application deadline: 4th August 2017

The University of York is a collegiate university, and as such, students do not just live in set accommodation blocks, but live with the rest of their college in each halls of residence. Postgraduate students have the choice of five different colleges, each with different room type opportunities; Halifax, Goodricke, Alcuin, Wentworth (the university's exclusively postgraduate college), and Langwith.

All students paying international fees who apply for accommodation and accept an unconditional offer by the deadline above, are guaranteed accommodation from the university.

Aston University

Application deadline: no deadline, but university accommodation is very limited so we would advise applying as soon as possible.

The university offer students five types of accommodation, all centrally located on campus, and within a short distance of all that the centre of Birmingham has to offer. Students can choose residences in William Murdoch, James Watt, Mary Sturge, Harriet Martineau, and Lakeside buildings.

Coventry University

Application deadline: ongoing

There are three types of university accommodation on offer to postgraduate students at Coventry: Market Way – located right in the city centre, this collection of studio flats is ten minutes walk to the university campus; The Cycle Works – new for 2017 this block is a mixture of flats and studio apartments, located five minutes from the university campus; Lynden House – most popular with postgraduate students the accommodation is twenty minutes from the university campus, and just five minutes from the train station.

Royal Holloway, University of London

Application deadline: 7th June 2017

The university has three types of accommodation available for postgraduate students: George Eliot Halls – the newest of the university halls, being brand new for 2017. Townhouses located on the northern side of the main campus, built around green spaces and trees; Penrose Court - a mixture of shared houses and apartments, located just a two minute walk from the main campus; Highfield Court – located in a landscaped setting on the north side of the main campus and offering en-suite shared apartments.

Rooms are allocated in a random process, but international postgraduate students have the first pick.
