MA Public Relations and Society

Programme Description:

This programme will provide students with an in-depth understanding of the public relations industry and its role in social, cultural and economic life. Currently, public relations is taught as a vocational degree by most institutions, which leaves little room for reflection on the social role it plays as a tool used by organisations of all kinds to influence the attitudes, values and behaviours of the audiences it targets. Media-related degrees, on the other hand, provide in-depth critiques of the media industries, but without taking sufficient account of the ways public relations works with those industries to shape their overall effects.

MA Media and Public Relations

Programme Description:

The MA Media and Public Relations is a one-year full-time taught course. The programme will introduce students to the study of PR as an academic discipline, approaching PR from a range of critical and theoretical perspectives. It will allow students to explore the principles and forms of public relations practice within the context of rapidly changing media environments. It will examine classic and emerging PR strategies and the use of research to inform PR campaigns and to measure their effectiveness as well as their wider social impacts. The course also places public relations within a wider strategic communications management context and examines how commercial organisations and NGOs campaigning for social change use PR techniques to advance their objectives and how crisis communication tools are applied to address challenges in organisational environments. The emphasis of this course is on the academic study of public relations and related communications professions, and has been produced and is taught by lecturers and support tutors who combine specialist knowledge of theory and research methods with experience of the public relations sector and its working practices.
